Jason Shen and The Asian Man Study on the Rock The Boat Podcast

11/4/2019

The reason why we have it so good now is that other people before us agitated and fought, whether it was in Asia or America. Our job is to pay it for and do it for the next generation.
- Jason Shen
Earlier this summer, Jason Shen was interviewed on the Rock the Boat podcast, episode #26. The podcast was started by two Asian American women based in NYC: Lucia Liu and Lynne Guey. Their goal with this narrative driven podcast to share discussions with Asian founders, advocates, and creators who are challenging the status quo.

The episode is part of their third season, which focuses on overcoming obstacles, and touched on a lot of topics including:
  • Being bullied as a kid for being Asian
  • How gymnastics shaped his personality and allowed him to develop a team mindset
  • The initial impetus for creating the Asian American Man Study (and how a lot of the first questions were around dating)
  • The lasting impact of stereotypes and how we must learn to succeed in spite of them (because we cannot "overcome" them)
  • Jason's article in Vox on Always Be My Maybe

Rock the Boat is a fantastic podcast and we recommend you subscribe and check out previous episodes including with Andrew Fung (of The Fung Bros), Bing Chen (Gold House), and Andrew Yang (yes, the Presidential candidate).
